2020 LSST Affiliate PI/Junior Associate Selection Round

The call for applications for LSST Affiliate PI status and for nominations for Junior Associate status closes at 4pm BST on Wednesday, 23rd October 2019.

Applications for Affiliate PI status and nominations for Junior Associate status should be made using the online application forms linked below.

Before doing so, you should read the LSST:UK Policy for Selection of Affiliate PIs and Junior Associates, which explains the selection process and the criteria that will be used by the Selection Committee. You should also read Articles 4 and 5 of the UK Memorandum of Agreement with LSST Corporation, which define the rights and responsibilities of Affiliate PIs and Junior Associates, as you will be required to agree to their conditions as part of the application process.

The current list of Junior Associates and their associated Affiliate PIs can be found here.

N.B. this selection round is unaffected by the changes to the LSST operations funding model. The UK Memorandum of Agreement with the LSST Corporation will remain in effect until June 2021, so, for example, Affiliate PI or Junior Associate status will continue to be required for membership of a Science Collaboration until that time (or until the MoA is superseded by a new agreement). So, LSST:UK will continue to run regular selection rounds to keep our AP and JA lists updated until a new arrangement takes effect.

Applying for Affiliate PI status

Application Form: https://edinburgh.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/2020-lsst-affiliate-pi-application-form

Guidance Notes: You are asked to summarise your relevant track record and to explain why you require, and how you would take advantage of having, Affiliate PI status. Your application should be self-contained; do not assume that the Selection Committee has any information beyond what you include in your application.

Nominating Junior Associates

Nomination Form: https://edinburgh.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/2020-lsst-junior-associate-application-form

Guidance Notes:Under the terms of the MoA each Junior Associate must be associated with a mentor who holds Affiliate PI status. In light of that, the form may be completed in one of two ways:

  1. as a nomination, by the proposed mentor of the candidate JA; or
  2. as a self-nomination, by the candidate JA themselves.

Those possessing Affiliate PI status may be mentor for up to four Junior Associates at one time. The current list of Junior Associates and their associated Affiliate PIs can be found here.

If you experience technical problems completing either of these forms please contact the LUSC Project Manager, George Beckett (george.beckett@ed.ac.uk), while any policy questions should be addressed to the LSST:UK Consortium Board Chair, Mike Watson (mgw@leicester.ac.uk).
