Privacy Statement

The LSST:UK Consortium (LSST:UK) may record and process your personal details if you are involved in UK participation in the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) or related projects. We will only record your personal details in the manner and for the purposes set out in this privacy statement. We will not sell, rent, trade or otherwise knowingly share or provide your personal information to any third party, except insofar as legally obliged to do so or as specified below.

Information we collect may include:

  • Your contact information, such as your title, name, organisational affiliation, postal address, and email address
  • Your scientific interests and involvement in the LSST community
  • Dietary, accessibility or other information required for meetings that we organise
  • Proposed travel information required for assessment of travel fund applications
  • Any other information you post, email or otherwise send to us 

We are using information about you because it is needed for the scientific activities of the LSST:UK Consortium, which coordinates the involvement of the UK scientific community in LSST.

LSST:UK uses external companies to process information about you, but it remains responsible for the information and for ensuring that it is kept securely. We may disclose information about you to:

  • Atlassian, who provide our wiki and cloud storage
  • JISC, who operate our mailing list and online survey services
  • Microsoft (Office365), who host our Pool Travel Fund application form

For those who are Affiliate PIs or Junior Associates, we will pass personal information to the Rubin Observatory, as required for establishing data rights. The current list of UK data rights holders will be included in the Rubin International Data Rights Holders list (https://www.lsst.org/scientists/international-drh-list), while present and past lists of UK data rights holders will be posted on the LSST:UK wiki (LSST:UK Affiliate PIs and Junior Associates). The Rubin Observatory is located in the United States and Chile, neither of which is an "adequate country" under the terms of the General Data Protection Regulation (see https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/uk-gdpr-guidance-and-resources/).

LSST:UK does not use profiling or automated decision-making processes.  A human decision maker will always be involved before any decision is reached in relation to you.

We may retain your personal data for the lifetime of the LSST:UK Consortium.
