How to use Gather.town for the LSST:UK conference

Registering to gather.town

If you already have been registered to the LSST:UK conference, please use this link: https://gather.town/app/DrFDevuZ0OIXpJGm/LSSTUK_all_hands with the password you have been emailed.

Once you have entered the password, write your name. You can also play around with the avatar and clothing, although it's a bit rudimentary.

You will need to give permission for your camera and microphone.

Now follow the tutorial. Move your avatar around the space with the arrow keys, or with WASD keys. Unlike Zoom, you do not talk to everyone else in the meeting, you just talk to whoever is close to you, or in the same room. If you can’t see them on camera, they can’t hear you.

This is a map of the conference area. You first arrive where it says Arrive here, and you can move with the arrow keys. See who else is around, and talk to them. If you go to the Map or Schedule, just click X on your keyboard to see it (if necessary, you can use the hand to grab the image and pull it up to view it in its entirety). There are whiteboards, and ways to share screen.

Here is a part of the lounge area, where you see a red and a purple area, each with table and chairs. If you are in one of these areas, you are seen and heard by other in that same area, but not other areas. These dark rectangles on the floor show areas where you can see and hear, be seen and be heard.
