Inspiring a new era in space missions – latest Rubin science release

An illustration of the asteroid belt as a dense donut-shaped ring of yellow points with the Sun at the center. The background is black with hints of dark blue in the corners and small white pinprick stars sprinkled throughout.

Rubin’s early warning system will have an impact on the planning and preparation of future space missions.

Published on 7 January 2024, a new science release from Rubin outlines how a discovery could trigger a space mission to a fast moving target.

Space missions that launch before a primary target has been identified are already in development: the JAXA/ESA Comet Interceptor mission is due to launch in 2029. A Rubin discovery could see the multi-element spacecraft directed to a long-period solar system comet or interstellar object passing by the sun for the first time.

Rubin could also identify flyby opportunities for missions that are already in progress, including NASA’s Lucy, whose shape and orbit are represented in the image, left.
