Community Scientists: LSST:UK call for applications
Applications are invited for several Community Scientist (CS) roles with the Rubin Community Science Team (CST). These roles are part of the UK’s in-kind contribution to the Vera C. Rubin Observatory (Rubin), through the STFC-funded LSST:UK Science Centre (LUSC) programme.
The CST supports the worldwide community of astronomers, scientists and students in their use of Rubin data products and services, as they produce scientific results from the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). CST support for the community is integral to the Rubin System Performance department, which is responsible for ensuring that the LSST is on-track to achieve its 10-year science goals. Locating some CST members in the UK will simplify and enhance support for data rights holders in European timezones.
These roles will typically be part-time at the level of 0.5 FTE for a 12 month period. Therefore, for example, an appointed individual may have an existing position that can be extended in the light of this additional CS funding, or be looking for a flexible part-time role. Variation on the 0.5FTE model and possible extensions beyond 12 months will be contingent on CST skills needs, applicant expertise, performance when in post, and availability of funding. There is also some flexibility to appoint at either Grade 7 or 8.
Newly-appointed CSs are required to have experience of Python programming and astronomical data analysis. Familiarity with the Rubin Science Platform and Data Preview data products and prior engagement with the LSST Science Collaborations would be advantageous, but are not essential.
Full training for newly-appointed CSs will be provided remotely, and potentially in person at a Rubin site, for example at the University of Washington, where the CST Lead Melissa Graham is located. While willingness to travel may therefore be an advantage, the positions will be predominantly UK-based, as they are designed to help disseminate expertise throughout the UK community
These positions will be available from early 2026, although with flexibility in the starting date. We expect to make up to two appointments in this round, depending on the availability of suitable applicants. Additional appointments are envisaged later in 2026 following a further call for applications, and in subsequent years throughout the LSST survey contingent on funding.
To apply, please email a CV (up to 2 pages) and brief statement of interest (up to 1 page) to Graham Smith by December 15th.
The statement of interest should (1) describe the applicant’s skills and experiences that are relevant to the role, (2) briefly outline how they envisage contributing to the CST, strengthening LSST:UK interests, and enhancing inclusion and equity within LSST:UK, and (3) state the applicant’s availability including preferred start date and percentage FTE.
Interviews are expected to take place remotely in mid-January 2026.
